Job Description
The Investigator – Public Defender is responsible for investigating a wide variety of criminal cases for both General Sessions and Family (Juvenile) Courts. Works at the pleasure of and reports to the Public Defender.
Essential Functions:
- Reviews and analyzes Law Enforcement case file reports, Body Worn Camera videos, statements and evidence.
- Conducts interviews with indigent defendants and witnesses for information at their residence, the Public Defender’s office, S.C. Dept of Corrections, the Detention Center or Department of Juvenile Justice.
- Documents pertinent information and shares with appropriate members of the Public Defender’s Office.
- Prepares cases for court by organizing all evidence and facts, completing reports.
- Provides Court testimony as necessary.
- Travels to and reviews crime scenes with attorney.
- Interviews Law Enforcement officers and witnesses in preparation for trial.
- Serves Subpoenas.
- Serves as training liason with South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
- Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms and driving skills.
- Interacts with various groups and individuals including the immediate supervisor, Public Defender, co-workers, employees, attorneys, suspects, victims, witnesses, court employees, community leaders, city departments, FBI, SLED, ATF, ABC agents, medical staff, Coroner, other state and federal agencies, etc.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Attends periodic trainings and seminars.
- Performs all other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience
- Must possess a High School Diploma.
- Must obtain a Certification with SC Justice Academy.
- Five years of law enforcement investigations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and experience.

- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 20 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 50%.
