The City of Pearland, TX is seeking to hire a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator to help improve aspects of the day-to-day operations of our Engineering & Public Works Department in the Right of Way Division. The Heavy Equipment Operator- Right of Way earns a competitive salary of $20.18 - $21.85/hourly based on qualifications. The Day in the Life of a Heavy Equipment Operator- Right of Way
Job Summary:
Performs activities involving daily street sweeping duties and special requests as assigned; performs a variety of support activities in the Right-of-Way (ROW) Division including operating a backhoe, grappler truck, forklift and a truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, coal, or paving materials.
Essential Functions
- Regular and timely attendance at work.
- Perform daily street sweeping duties and special request as assigned; complete a daily log of work performed and notify immediate supervisor of equipment needed
- Inspect equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water every day, and report any problems.
- Maintain record of work performed such as vehicle checklists, trip logs, and repair logs.
- Inspect, track, and mange work performance provided by outsourced street sweeping services
- Clean culverts and ditches of debris as needed
- Remove downed trees, put up and take down high water signs and barricades, temporary street signs for road closing, stop signs, road spills, etc.
- Load truck by hand or by operating mechanical loader
- Sand bridges for ice in winter as necessary, and assist in preparation for storm and evacuations
- Assist with street sign repairs as needed
- Complete routine maintenance on equipment as needed
- Remove and maintain debris within the right-of-way
- Serve as "essential personnel" as required to remain available for immediate call-in dure to any natural or "man-made" disaster, or any other event the Public Works Director or City Manager deem necessary.
- Contribute to team effort performing other related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licenses
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Minimum of two (2) years related experience and/or training in maintenance or construction work, including some operation of light motorized equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Special License
- Valid Texas Driver's License
- Valid Class B CDL
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence; Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Must possess the skill to operate 5-to-10-ton dump trucks and other equipment.
- Ability to read work orders, maps, equipment operating instructions, and other work-related material.
- A knowledge of construction safety procedures and practices pertinent to traffic laws and safety procedures governing the transportation and operation of vehicles and equipment on and off public streets, is required.
- Ability to operate a pick-up truck, cutting saw, shovel, laser, pick, ladder, wheelbarrow, jack hammer, chain saw, cement saw, weed eater, and other small tools
- Able to safely work in extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain.
