General Description: This is a supervisory position. The incumbent leads the work of skilled technical staff that maintain and care for County grounds. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe environment for park, athletic, school ground patrons and employees.
Organization: The Groundskeeper Supervisor reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and supervises Groundskeepers.
Essential Functions:
- Supervises employees, performing related human resources functions and completing necessary paperwork.
- Develops schedule for athletic field / grounds maintenance and construction, special events, litter / refuse control, and weekend park patrol program.
- Ensures proper maintenance, including all aspects of landscaping.
- Coordinates the preparation and delivery of supplies.
- Assists with the coordination of construction / renovation of athletic fields, the installation / design / repair of irrigation systems, and the implementation of the turf management program.
- Performs essential functions of Groundskeeper as needed.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Working Conditions:
A. Hazards
- Chemicals – May have contact with hazardous chemicals
- Conditions – Must operate equipment safely to avoid injury
B. Environment
- Field – Tasks are performed normally outside, sometimes in adverse weather; Must be able to drive to locations in order to perform essential functions
C. Physical Effort
- Operation of commercial mowing and landscaping equipment, gas powered hand tools and heavy duty equipment as qualified; Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
D. Non-exempt
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of all phases of turf management. Must be able to operate ground maintenance equipment, power tools and hand tools.
Education, Experience and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required with at least three (3) years’ related experience, including two (2) years as a supervisor – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.
Special Conditions:
- Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
- Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License / Class “A” CDL required within 6 months
- Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s Certification required within 6 months
- Pre-employment Physical Examination/Drug Test /Alcohol Testing and repeated in accordance to policy thereafter
- Pre-employment audiometric testing and hearing conservation and repeated in accordance to policy thereafter
- Twelve-month probationary period
- Work beyond normal schedule, including weekends, holidays, nights and call-back
- Must wear uniform, including safety equipment
