Job Summary:
The Natural Areas & Trails division, within the City’s Culture, Parks and Recreation Department manages over 1,000 acres of natural areas and the city’s 30-mile trail system including over ten miles of the regional Poudre River Trail. This new and growing division is seeking innovative, creative, and motivated professionals to join the team to strive toward the division’s vision of a community connected to nature.
The Natural Areas & Trails Part Time Groundskeeper position assists the Natural Areas & Trails Division with various maintenance and management practices in the City’s natural areas. Primarily, duties include daily trailhead cleaning & stocking services and cycle-scheduled maintenance of vegetation in City natural areas, along trail corridors, dog parks and other public grounds. Groundskeepers have a high level of public interaction/inquiries about property conditions, amenities, wildlife & management projects. This position also aids in amenity installations & guided volunteer projects. Rain or shine, there is always something to do.
Hours/Schedule:
- Typical Schedule: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. 3-5 Days/Week, M-F.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be 18 years old.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with 2 years of driving experience.
Preferred:
- One (1) or more years' experience with native landscape maintenance or parks/forestry maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to operate pickups, be trained to tow trailers.
- Ability to operate machinery such as power tools, string-trimmer, edger, lawnmower, brush-mower, blower, and/or be trained for UTV/ATV, 72” industrial riding mower, small tractors with implements, brush chipper, chainsaw, rowboat.
- Ability to plant and water trees & shrubs, pruning using proper techniques.
- Ability to work as a team member as well as independently.
- Interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate interaction, communication, and teamwork between others.
- Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and stay on task when completing special projects and daily assignments.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and reliable professional judgment, as well as collaboratively with a team to achieve desired results.
Essential Functions:
- Communicate effectively with staff and members of the public.
- Follow workplace safety rules at all times, identify & report unsafe conditions.
- Must be able to work in a team setting and also accomplish tasks independently.
- Daily trailhead cleaning.
- Maintenance of vegetation.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Work outside with exposure to ALL weather elements- Sun, Heat, Cold, Wind, Hail.
- Long periods of time involved in performing landscape maintenance duties, amenity cleaning, property cleanup, digging, painting/staining.
- Exposure to noise, dirt, dust, chemicals, plant allergens and thorns, insects.
- Cleanup roadside litter, storm debris, downed trees, flooding, mudslides, rock-falls.
- Exposure to trash, dog feces, living and deceased wildlife, stagnant water.
- Property grounds of varying topographical & vegetation cover conditions including shortgrass prairie, water bodies, wetlands, streams and rivers, and irrigation canals.
- Maintenance of concrete and soft-surface trails, primitive paths, gravel roads and parking lots.
- Limited access to on-grid power, drinking water, restroom, cell reception, and lunches and breaks may be and out in the field away from facilities.
- Manual labor, prolonged standing, kneeling, bending & walking, climbing ladders & stairs.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis, traveling across uneven ground.
- Ability to lift arms above shoulder level to manipulate and/or move objects.
- Ability to lift up to 65 pounds infrequently.
- Manual dexterity enough to operate hand & power tools.
- Vision enough to perform above functions, drive, read printed instructions.
- Hearing enough to take note of cautionary alarms/alerts and/or warning callouts.
