LOCATION: City of Saratoga Springs NY – Mayors Department
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following qualification(s) MUST be met and clearly detailed in the application form on or before the last filing date:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered FOUR (4) YEAR college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree and ONE (1) YEAR of full-time paid legal office experience; OR
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered TWO YEAR college or university with an Associate’s and Three (3) YEARS of full-time paid legal office experience; OR
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and FIVE (5) YEARS of full-time paid legal office experience.
SPECIAL NOTES:
Legal experience is defined as: processing FOIL requests, drafting motions and resolutions, legal research, updating and maintenance of legal files, reports, and records;
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITES:
- Receives all Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests and process requests in accordance with established protocol; follows-up with other involved departments to ensure timely response; drafts and sends responses;
- Keeps calendar for City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney and arranges appointments and conferences
- Types and formats legal opinions, answers and other official legal documentation to courts for litigation and other legal matters;
- Composes, reads, interprets and summarizes correspondence, memos and reports to facilitate review by the City Attorney;
DUTIES:
- This position exists in the Mayor’s Department and works directly with the City Attorney.
- This individual will independently coordinate many of the administrative details and routine affairs of the legal office.
- Employees in this class keep the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney’s calendar, open and sort the mail, arrange conferences, maintain confidential files, compile data for reports, and frequently transcribe important or confidential dictation. Within carefully established guidelines, employees may give out information regarding policies and practices, compose routine memorandums and correspondence.
- Work is performed under the general supervision of the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney with detailed instructions received only where work policies have not been previously determined.
- Supervision over others may be a responsibility of this position.
- In addition, this position may perform other related duties as assigned by the Mayor and/or Deputy Mayor.
