Location: This position demands full-time, on-site presence. The primary work-site will be one of our Detroit, MI plants, with occasional travel to our Corporate office in Redford, MI. Remote work options are not available for this role.
Responsibilities:- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive safety program that adheres to all Federal, State and Local regulations including applicable OSHA, NFPA, and industry safety standards for handling and using dangerous chemicals in an automotive assembly environment.
- Develop and manage ongoing OSHA / EPA required Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP)
- Keep abreast of any changes in state, federal and local laws surrounding the industry.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to address regulatory compliance.
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify potential chemical hazards, evaluate associated risks, and implement corrective actions.
- Scheduled and oversee all required and recurring __ assessments
- Proactively develop and implement risk mitigation solutions
- Develop and deliver safety standards, requirements and training programs for all employees on various chemical safety topics, including:
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) selection and usage
- Emergency response procedures for chemical spills and exposures
- Safe work practices with hazardous materials
- Chemical safety procedures, including proper handling, storage, and emergency response.
- Hazard Communication
- Chemical Hygiene
- Industrial Hygiene
- Respiratory Protection
- Manage the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database and ensure accessibility to all employees.
- Monitor and manage hazardous waste disposal, air emissions, water discharge, and other environmental impacts associated with manufacturing operations.
- Work with all functional department heads to ensure work procedures and policies are followed to maintain a safe working environment.
- Manage and oversee safety, inspections, and repairs for all company facilities.
- Perform safety stand down meetings to ensure timely and effective communication to all employees following all near miss or incidents within the facility.
- Investigate and analyze workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses involving chemicals to identify root causes and develop preventative measures.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety documentation, including incident reports, training records, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals used in the assembly process.
- Interface with regulatory agencies and ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations governing chemical and bulk gas handling and storage.
- Promote a culture of safety by fostering employee participation in safety initiatives and encouraging safe work practices around hazardous materials.
- Stay current on industry best practices and emerging trends in chemical safety management.
- Collaborate with other departments, including engineering, production, and human resources, to integrate safety considerations into all aspects of the chemical handling and use within the assembly process.
- Manage the safety budget and ensure resources are allocated effectively to support safety initiatives.
- Oversee site specific environmental programs to ensure the organization's activities align with environmental standards and regulations.
- Implement initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of the sites operations.
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety or a related field (e.g., Chemistry, Environmental Science) preferred.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in a safety leadership role, preferably within the automotive or manufacturing industry.
- Proven experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive safety program for chemical handling and use.
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Federal and State Health & Safety Regulations, especially of OSHA, NFPA, and other relevant safety standards for chemical handling and storage.
- Strong leadership and organization, with the ability to prioritize duties and achieve goals with limited supervision.
Comprehensive knowledge of environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, EGLE, OSHA) and industry standards.
- Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement efforts and corrective actions
- Ability to communicate well with plant employees, vendors, customers, and C-Suite leaders.
- Ability to analyze data and prepare presentations and communications
- Working knowledge of ISO, OSHA, and EPA regulations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with company personnel at all levels.
- Ability to train and motivate employees on safe chemical handling procedures.
Knowledge of: Electrical safety, Gas monitoring and Fluid systems
- Must be a proactive and self-motivated safety leader
- Some travel, including overseas maybe expected to support launch and equipment buyoff activities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient knowledge of computers and typical production software (e.g., MS Office, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
