PotomacWave Consulting is currently looking for an Education Specialist to join our team supporting a Federal client in Frederick, Maryland (Ft. Detrick). This position will be responsible for coordinating and managing the Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) Program, a STEM program that is conducted each summer for approximately six hundred (600) students (fourth grade through college students), sponsored by the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) and the United States Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC). This position will also be responsible for participating in planning, conducting additional STEM activities, and assisting in outreach and partnership activities throughout the year to include outreach to local elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as colleges and universities, to increase awareness of STEM program opportunities.
Responsibilities:
- Execute GEMS Program during June, July, August
- Preparing materials each week for all staff (i.e., lesson worksheets, supplies or equipment)
- Overseeing and coordinating daily activities of GEMS Program staff during the summer program performance period, and assisting with general classroom management of 100-120 students each week
- Training staff on curriculum and GEMS best practices
- Organizing and hosting weekly GEMS graduation ceremonies and speaker engagements
- Coordinating participation of guest speakers and subject matter experts in GEMS Program activities
- Communication with shareholders including SMEs, parents, guardians, students, colleges, AEOP, and NSTA
- Plan and prepare for local GEMS program while assisting other USAMRDC GEMS locations
- Reviewing and updating the GEMS Program curriculum to align with current educational standards and objectives as well as USAMRDC’s strengths
- Developing the annual budget for the GEMS Program including program staff, stipends for participating students, equipment and supplies, and laboratory space based on AEOP guidance
- Managing review of applications and hiring of 20-25 person GEMS Program staff (college undergraduates, 11th and 12th grade high school students, and certified K-12 teachers)
- Conducting review of student applications and selection of participants for the GEMS Program, and creating class rosters
- Providing all administration for the GEMS Program, including management of employee forms and onboarding activities (i.e., background checks, W-9 forms, etc.), student forms, stipend checks, staff payroll, and purchasing of equipment and supplies
- Advertising and marketing the program to expand reach and increase targeted groups
- Social Media and USAMRDC STEM site management and creation of media
- Conducting educational outreach activities with local schools and establish educational partnership agreements for sharing of resources and information
- Developing briefings and providing data and other information to respond to inquiries about educational programs
- Manage and maintain STEM SharePoint site
- Assist the STEM Coordinator/Managerial Assistant, in STEM related tasks
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; science, engineering, or curriculum writing preferred
- Three to ten (3-10) years of related experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate and interact with senior Officers
- Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated skills in using Microsoft applications
- Highly organized and adept at managing multiple projects and clients simultaneously at a high standard in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Adaptable to rapidly changing priorities and able to manage multiple deadlines and deliver high quality work products, with minimal supervision
- Must have an active Secret clearance
