Job DescriptionSummary of Position
The Director of Public Safety directs the University’s security and environmental health and safety functions; including personnel, budgets, systems, policies and procedures. This position develops and maintains strategic plans and comprehensive initiatives for the management of risk with additional consideration directed at international study abroad sites.
Primary Responsibilities
- Individual/Asset Protection: Develop and administer resources focused on comprehensive plans promoting a safe learning and working environment for students, guests, faculty, and staff. Identify departmental needs, develop policies and procedures, and assist with investigations and documentation. Responsible for Campus Security Act compliance and other required reports.
- Transportation Administration: Provide oversight of the assessment and management of campus transportation and parking needs, policies, plans, and enforcement.
- Communications: Oversee campus switchboard, dispatch, and emergency/on-call communications.
- Budgets/Procurement: Prepare annual department budget and manage expenditures. Approve supply and equipment purchases and identify suppliers and resources.
- Team Leadership: Assign and control flow of work, managing operational and capital fiscal resources, hiring, and onboarding, ensuring training for and managing performance of employees, students, and third party services associated with public safety, communications, and transportation services.
- On-Call Responsibilities: Serves in an on-call capacity to ensure emergencies are adequately addressed.
- Conduct/Title IX: Works with the University’s conduct and Title IX teams to help enforce University’s standards of conduct, including investigating and/or adjudicating alleged violations.
- External Relationships: Works with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and maintains ongoing partnerships with local law enforcement, first responders, and other support organizations associated with emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.
- Crime Prevention: Ensure training for faculty, staff, and students across the University in work-safety, crime prevention, loss control, emergency procedures, and personal safety; conduct safety inspections.
- Systems: Conduct needs assessment and ensure effectiveness of safety and security systems: locks, fire and security alarms, card access, CCTVs, dispatch/reporting/record keeping software, etc.
Additional Responsibilities
- Workers Compensation: Coordinate with Human Resources in reducing work injuries; ensure remediation of environmental problems (e.g., ergonomics); investigation, reporting.
- Other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Typical work environment is an office with regular computer and phone use. Sedentary work for long periods of time.
- Occasional strenuous physical conditions or potentially extreme temperature conditions, such as medical or security emergencies, indoors or outdoors.
- Exposure to irritating noise levels or substances such as in emergencies, chemicals, mace.
- Intense work environment associated with infrequent encounters with hostile or injured people.
- Occasional long or irregular hours including some weekends and evenings.
- Occasional travel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field.
- Seven (7) years of professional experience in public safety, security, or related field.
- Five (5) years of professional experience in supervision and administration.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of higher education compliance requirements (e.g., Clery Act, FERPA, Kari Koskinen, Title IX/VAWA, etc.).
- Demonstrated intercultural competence with an ability to adapt and develop new skills.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Ability to be attentive to details, be accurate, be precise, and maintain confidentiality as needed.
- Ability to lead/teach in a team environment; work independently with little supervision.
- Ability to demonstrate patience and understanding while handling potentially frequent interruptions.
- Ability to show initiative, organize workflow, and manage one or more projects.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience working on a college/university campus.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.
- First responder, first aid, CPP, AED certification(s).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and security reporting software.
- Familiarity with card access, fire and security alarms, and CCTV systems.

The compensation range is $75,000 - $97,000 per year, DOQ.
