Martha Jefferson House is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that offers Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Long-Term Nursing Care. As a private, boutique community, we are able to approach resident care with a person-centered care plan that recognizes and respects all individuals uniquely.
To excel in this role, you should have the following skills:
- BSN from an accredited school of Nursing. Currently licensed by the Virginia Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
- This is a leadership role that requires strong clinical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to effectively manage a team
- Assigns, schedules, and directs work of all nursing department staff, including evaluating performance, rewarding and disciplining department staff, addressing complaints, and resolving issues
- Develop and implement nursing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations
- Collaborate with other departments to coordinate resident care plans and ensure continuity of care
- Ensure compliance with resident rights and promote a culture of respect, dignity, and person-centered care
- On call and available 24 hours/7 days per week, except when prior approval has been granted, to assist onsite staff with all nursing-related requests
Summary: Ensures the provision of quality nursing care on a 24-hour basis to the residents of The Martha Jefferson House in accordance with Federal, State and local standards and regulations. Plans, directs and supervises the administrative activities of the Nursing Department according to the policies and procedures of the Health Care Center. Oversees, provides and administers nursing care according to physician’s orders and in conformity with recognized safe nursing practices and standards.
In the absence of the CEO/Administrator, the Director of Nursing Services is responsible for the overall operations of the facility.
Essential Functions:
- Determines the kind and amount of nursing care needed to meet the needs and objectives of the Health Care Center for each resident.
- Assigns responsibility and delegates authority within the Nursing Department.
- Continually evaluates the needs and services of resident nursing care in the facility.
- Identifies and studies nursing services problems and assists in their solutions.
- Serves as a consultant on the admitting and discharging of residents.
- Assists in the implementation of and reviews nursing care plans for residents.
- Works closely with the interdisciplinary care team and senior management team. As well as working closely with residents and resident family members/POAs to ensure quality of care.
- Assumes ultimate responsibility for coordination of total care for residents.
- Monitors maintenance of records reflecting resident’s condition, medications, and treatments.
- Coordinates, plans and assists the CEO with quarterly Quality Assurance meetings with the Medical Director, Pharmacy, and interdisciplinary team.
- Responsible for the recruitment and hiring of both licensed and non-licensed nursing personnel.
- Monitors the job performance of the nursing staff and recommends employee transfers, promotions, and terminations.
- Evaluate the performance of new nursing personnel at 30, 60, 90 days, and annually for all other staff or as needed.
- Monitors staffing levels and as necessary, directs staff rotations and reschedules personnel to meet increased or decreased nursing service demands.
- Establishes written on-the-job training programs for all levels of staff and participates in orientation.
- Plans for and participates in in-service education.
- Coordinates nursing service with other departments.
- Oversees preparation of payroll records for nursing staff.
- Assists with the preparation of the Departmental annual budget and, maintains the operating budgets for personnel and medical equipment and makes budget recommendations as to the purchase of such equipment.
- Oversees and implements infection control, pharmaceutical, and physical/chemical restraining policies and procedures.
- Recommends change in the interest of effective use of space and equipment.
- Orders necessary medical or other supplies necessary for nursing services.
- Participates in interdisciplinary family conferences and develops care plan goals for residents in compliance with Federal and state regulations
- Participates as a member of the Quality Assurance Committee, Falls Committee, and Weight Management Committee.
- Performs any duties assigned by the CEO that contribute to the efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction of the facility.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Education: A BSN from an accredited school of Nursing. Currently licensed by the Virginia Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. In compliance with state licensing in earning CEUs. Certified in CPR/First Aid.
Job Knowledge: Three to five years of management nursing experience, preferably in a long-term care facility. Ability to manage, lead, collaborate, train, educate, and supervise.
Standards: Must have a genuine interest in the elderly. Patience and tact. Interested in learning and advancement; ability to work congenially with others. Respect for the principles of resident rights, confidentiality, EEO and ADA. Must be able to move between multiple tasks concurrently and make decisions efficiently.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises RNs, LPNs, RMAs, CNAs and Resident Services.
Performance Requirements: Regular and reliable attendance; irregular hours when necessary; attending work-related meetings; completing online Relias training on time; attendance at all mandatory trainings-quarterly, at 6 months and annually. Directing others, handling confidential information, keyboarding/typing, computer knowledge, maintaining consistent effort through the workday, meeting deadlines, operating equipment, staying organized, using math/performing calculations.
Mental Requirements: Ability to think analytically, handle stressful situations, concentrate on tasks, communicate effectively in written and verbal form, examine/observe and remember details, make decisions, adjust to change, and work as a collaborative team member.
