About This Role
The Director of Finance leads the financial strategy, management, and operations of the organization. This role works closely with the Secretary-Treasurer, executive leadership, and department directors to ensure sound fiscal management, regulatory compliance, and alignment of financial practices with organizational goals. The Director of Finance oversees budgeting, auditing, payroll, compliance filings, and financial analysis while maintaining accuracy and transparency in all financial functions.
Essential Functions:
- Strategic Financial Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Secretary-Treasurer to prepare and maintain financial budgets for approval by the Board, along with analyses, and tools for use by union officers, department directors and team leaders.
- Provide strategic financial insights to guide decision-making and align fiscal operations with organizational goals.
- Monitor key financial metrics, industry trends, cash reserves and investments to identify opportunities and mitigate risks.
- Financial Operations Management:
- Implement and enforce financial policies, procedures, and controls to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, bank statements, and inventory systems.
- Oversee cash controls, accounts payable/receivable, and weekly/monthly account monitoring.
- Manage sensitive financial records, including facilitation of audits and preparation of financial statements for Officers and the Executive Board.
- Ensure timely and accurate entry of data into accounting systems, including QuickBooks, and prepare third-party invoices.
- Verify security and charges for all credit cards.
- Work with investment advisor and union officers to implement Board approved investment policies.
- Compliance and Reporting:
- Prepare and maintain all compliance filings, including DOL, LM, PDC, SEEC, tax documents, and other required reports.
- Ensure alignment with generally accepted accounting principles, budgeting, and auditing techniques.
- Prepare and present detailed financial reports and statements to board members, officers, and stakeholders.
- Team Collaboration and Support:
- Work closely with HR and DTECH Directors to maintain and enhance paperless filing and information systems.
- Provide leadership in team building, problem analysis, systems development, and conflict resolution.
- Lead pre-launch training sessions and provide ongoing support for financial systems.
- Organizational Engagement:
- Support political campaigns, organizing efforts, and the organization’s annual convention.
- Occasionally travel overnight or work weekends as required by the organization’s needs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Abilities:
- Leadership and team-building skills, with strong systems development and management abilities.
- Ability to analyze financial records, prepare comprehensive reports, and present findings effectively.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks, ADP, MS Office, and databases; experience with SharePoint, PDC, DOL, and EEOC reporting is a plus.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to draft reports, correspondence, and procedures.
- Knowledge of financial statements, account ledgers, cash management, and inventory systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced, campaign-style environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business with 5+ years of experience in accounting/auditing; OR a minimum of 10 years of experience in accounting/auditing, including 2+ years in a supervisory role.
- Preferred Experience:
- Experience in a labor union, labor-oriented firm, or progressive-minded nonprofit.
- Familiarity with union operations, including key labor concepts and values.
- Generally accepted accounting principles, budgeting, and auditing.
- Supervisory practices and inventory systems.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
- This is a full-time, exempt position. As a Full-Time, Exempt employee you are not eligible for overtime. Hours of operation will depend on what you and your supervisor agree to. Must have flexibility in schedule during extended business hours allowing stakeholders to access services. From time to time, the Director of Finance may be expected to participate in Union activities outside of normal business hours, including weekends and after-hours.
- This position is 75% remote, 25% at HQ Seattle. The position is normally required to be in the office at least two (2) days weekly, or when needed (based on business needs). Vice President has the ability to depict work schedules.
Compensation:
Providing current or previous salary information is optional and will not be factored into hiring decisions. Prospective Employees covered by the CBA can request a copy of the wage scale, the CBA, and any current relevant MOUs upon application to the position.
This position is full-time, exempt. This position is not included in the Bargaining Unit. Pay ranges from $133,764 – $167,052 per year. Benefits include vacation, holiday, and sick leave benefits, fully employer paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance, defined benefit pension plan, and optional 401(k), WFH credit, and more.
