Location Description: Hawks Cay Resort, an iconic destination resort in the Florida Keys, reopened in August 2018 following a $50 million renovation. A recipient of the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award and a member of the Preferred Hotel Group Lifestyle Collection, this 60-acre, tropical destination boasts 177 guestrooms and 250 two
• and three-bedroom villas, a full-service marina, six restaurants, saltwater lagoon, five swimming pools, kid and teen clubs and spa.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The Director of Engineering is responsible for the engineering and maintenance program.
- Plans, schedules and conducts or coordinates the detailed phases of engineering work. The position requires judgement in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
- Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Requires sufficient professional experience to assure competence as a fully trained worker, and assists his staff in making repairs "as needed" to the furniture, fixtures, and equipment located throughout the complex.
- As a staff specialist, develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others.
- Supervises, coordinates and reviews the work of maintenance workers; estimates personnel needs and schedules and assigns work to meet completion dates. Evaluates progress of staff and results obtained; and recommends major changes to achieve over-all objectives. Selects and trains new personnel, as needed, to meet these objectives (or delegates training to meet objectives).
- Demonstrates a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving unprecedented problems, determining program objectives and requirements, organizing programs and projects and developing standards and guides for diverse engineering activities.
- Recommends facilities, personnel, and funds required to carry out programs which are directly related to and directed toward fulfillment of overall company objectives. Prepares budgets and projections for the staffing and expense of the maintenance and grounds keeping department and regarding energy consumption.
- As an individual consultant, is a recognized leader and authority in the company in a broad area of specialization.
- Is consulted extensively by associates and others, with a high degree of reliance placed on the incumbent's professional interpretations and advice.
- Establishes the implementation of a Preventive Maintenance Program that will increase equipment life, reduce energy consumption, reduce equipment downtime and malfunctions, reduce guest complaints and increase productivity of maintenance personnel. The preventive maintenance program should also ensure the daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual routine and factory prescribed maintenance of all equipment.
- Ensures that regular, routine inspections are conducted of all possible sources of energy loss (heat, light, power, air-conditioning, water) to maximize efficiency and cost control in these areas.
- Safe-guards all tools, equipment, and company assets for which the Engineering Department is responsible.
- Stocks a sufficient inventory of parts and supplies to ensure proper or continued operation of the resort’s equipment and facilities. Safe-guards and inventories parts and supplies as required by company policies and procedures.
- The Director of Engineering must be totally knowledgeable in all aspects of the resort's FIRE AND OTHER EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES.
- The Director of Engineering's responsibilities may also include the supervision and direction of all outside contractors working at the Resort.
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in engineering, or the equivalent of a degree in appropriate education and experience. Expertise is required in the fields of air conditioning, carpentry, electricity, mechanics, painting, plumbing, water and sewage systems. A broad knowledge of precedents and procedures related specifically to the maintenance of resort or institutional facilities is required.
Applicants should have at least three to five years prior experience as the Director of Engineering or Maintenance Supervisor of a large, or comparable facility or resort. Individuals with five to ten years prior experience as an Assistant Engineer in a comparable facility may be considered.
Additional requirements include excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent organizational skills. The ability to deal with the general public (resort guests, staff and vendors) in a warm, friendly and courteous manner is also essential.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The Director of Engineering must be in excellent physical condition, with a strong back, arms and legs and capable of climbing ladders, crawling under buildings and lifting heavy motors and equipment. Must have excellent eyesight and hearing (natural or corrected).
