About Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures (PA&L)
Through our five signature lecture series, PA&L connects celebrated authors with the community, elevates civic discourse, and inspires creativity and a passion for the literary arts. Our commitment to knowledge, learning, integrity, and artistic excellence guides and informs our work. We endeavor to inspire members of diverse communities by providing opportunities to experience authors who speak on issues that reflect our values such as justice, compassion, civic responsibility, acceptance, courage, and equity.
We present approximately 40 events each year. Our five signature program series include:
- Ten Evenings, our mainstage series, where we present celebrated authors generously sharing their research and creative process in conversational lectures.
- New & Noted brings touring authors to Pittsburgh with their newly released titles.
- Words & Pictures presents acclaimed children’s authors and illustrators to readers of all ages.
- Made Local showcases talented local authors as well as books and writers with a Pittsburgh connection.
- Poets Aloud features readings by nationally recognized poets.
Job Summary
The Development Manager is responsible for developing fundraising strategies and managing individual donations, foundation and government grants, and program sponsors. This role is actively engaged in key relationships with individual donors and funding partners and oversees office management operations including processing payables and receivables Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required for this role.
Position Responsibilities
Fundraising and Donor Relationship
- Work closely with the Executive Director to develop fundraising strategies to establish goals and meet organizational budgets and objectives
- Oversee and manage individual donor relationships and correspondence, including gift acknowledgements, donor benefits, database management, etc.
- Manage sponsor relationships through timely correspondence and year-round cultivation
Grants and Contributions
- Manage foundation and government funding cycles of the organization; includes grant writing and managing the application/reporting process
- Identify new grant opportunities and contributions strategies
Receivables and Payables
- Properly process payables and receivables: timely coding and filing, problem-solving with vendors as necessary, liaison with vendors such as insurance, auditor, healthcare, rental agency, etc.
General
- Participate as an active team member in the successful implementation of PA&L’s mission and values.
- Work as the Accessibility Coordinator of the organization
- Work as the Board Liaison and attend Board meetings to take meetings’ minutes.
- Attend all the events
Position Qualifications and Proficiencies
The ideal candidate is eager to advance their career in a mission-focused arts nonprofit with a commitment to community, diversity, and the essential role literature plays in civic life. They are an excellent communicator and creative thinker, are curious and have great interpersonal skills, have an aptitude for computer technology, and are eager to learn new skills.
- 2 years of non-profit development experience
- Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent grammar, spelling, and attention to detail in digital and print formats.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- A willingness to learn new software systems is paramount, including Tessitura.
- Interest in and aptitude for diversity, equity, and inclusion work.
- Some degree of comfort with numbers.
- Organized, efficient, and deadline-oriented.
- Works well in collaborative, supportive, positive work environment with high level of trust and good humor.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to access and navigate the organizations’ events.
Salary
$55,000 - $60,000, plus full healthcare coverage, generous paid time off for vacation, sick time, and holidays, and a 25% match for a 403b retirement plan.
Benefits The regular hours for our 37.5-hour work week are 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. We offer 100% employer-provided Medical, Dental, Vision, and Disability Insurance plans with excellent coverage, and a 403(b) retirement plan with 25% matching from PA&L. Paid time off includes vacation days, sick time, holidays, and personal time. Additional benefits include work-from-home Fridays and a parking pass for our Oakland office.
