Dental Assistant
Community HealthNet is seeking a Dental Assistant for the Gary, Indiana location.
Under the direct supervision of the General Dentist or Hygienist, cleans calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums, using dental instruments. Feels lymph nodes under patient's chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer. Feels and visually examines gums for sores and signs of disease. Provide clinical services and health education to improve and maintain oral health of school children, adults, and geriatric patients.
Job Summary
Chair-side Assisting Duties
- Assists the dentists during oral exams by charting treatment plan as dictated by dentists
- Assist dentist during procedures by passing appropriate instruments and materials
- Prepares and mixes dental materials necessary and/or instructed by dentists
- Maintains a clear operative field by retracting lip, cheek, tongue and by using suction, air and water syringe
- Assists the dentists by taking impressions for lab procedures, cement and remove temporary bridges and crowns, apply dental sealants, removing excess cement, etc.
- Assists as directed and in accordance with training during oral surgery
- Provides post-operative instructions to patients
- Flushes suction lines after procedures
General Duties
- Prepare Clinical Areas
- Turn on compressor and x-ray units
- Turn on sterilizers and x-ray developer and check water levels
- Fill water bottles for chairs with distilled water
- Flush water lines for no less than 20 seconds
- Turn on amalgamators and curing lights
- Fill ultrasonic cleaner with appropriate solution
- Date stamp and initial sterilizing indicator strips
- Reviews chart with Dentist to establish treatment plan
- Reviews medical chart for medical history and medications to ensure proper anesthetics and treatment
- Prepares operatory for treatment planned
- Arranges appropriate dental instruments necessary for treatment
- Seat patients
Implements infection control procedures in compliance with CDC and/or state specific infection control practices
- Disinfect chair and operatory equipment between patients
- Removing used instruments and cassettes from operatory to soiled area
- Ensures that instruments are run through the ultrasonic cleaner, wrapped or bagged as appropriate with sterilizing indicator strips
- Disinfects impressions and other materials used during procedures
- Trainer/lead responsibilities
- Act as trainer to new staff by assisting in their orientation
- Pours and trims models made from impressions and fabricates custom trays
- As directed or in accordance with state law, exposes, develops, mounts and duplicates radiographs
- Performs routine maintenance equipment
- Changing suctions traps on chairs as needed but no less than weekly
- Changing trap on suction pump as needed but no less than monthly
- Flush cleaning solution and scrub sterilizers as needed but not less than monthly
- Identifying operating issues with equipment and taking appropriate action to ensure that they are resolved
- Hand pieces are cleaned and lubricated between each use
- Prepares clinical area for clinic closing
- Turn off amalgamators and curing lights
- Flush suction lines with enzymatic solution
- Flush water lines
- Run water lines again without water to ensure that the lines are dry
- Drain solution from ultrasonic and rinse unit
- Turn off sterilizers
- Drain water from dental chair area
- Turn off compressor and x-ray
- Ensures that inventory is maintained by notifying appropriate personnel of need
Skills and Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Graduated from an accredited program for Dental Assistants.
- Dental Assisting Certification Have a CDA or RDA
- DANB certification in Radiology
- Radiographic license in IN
- EFDA preferred
- CPR Certification
- Two years of experience as a Dental Assistance
- Bilingual preferred
Duties:

- Using computers to update electronic patient records
- Assisting with lab tasks as needed
- Assisting with front office tasks as needed
