Job Summary
The Custom Tooling Technician plays a critical role in the manufacturing process by designing, fabricating, and maintaining custom tools used in production. This mid-level position requires a strong understanding of machining, materials, and CAD design to support the Custom Tooling Specialist in developing custom tools that meet specific production needs. The technician will work closely with production teams to ensure that tools are manufactured to exact specifications, are maintained properly, and are optimized for efficiency and quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Tool Fabrication and Maintenance:
- Manufacture custom tools based on specifications provided by the Custom Tooling Specialist.
- Operate and maintain a variety of machining equipment, including lathes, mills, and CNC machines, to produce high-quality tooling components.
- Perform regular maintenance and repairs on custom tools to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Ensure all tooling meets company safety standards and regulatory compliance.
Inventory & Material Management
- Maintain inventory of tooling materials and supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels for ongoing projects.
- Monitor usage and order replacement parts and materials as needed to avoid production delays.
- Track and record tool usage, maintenance, and modifications for reference and future planning.
Quality Control & Improvement:
- Inspect and test finished tools to ensure they meet required specifications and quality standards.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements in tooling design and manufacturing to enhance efficiency and product quality.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and suggest innovative solutions to tooling challenges.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work collaboratively with production and engineering teams to understand tooling needs and priorities.
- Communicate effectively with the Custom Tooling Specialist and other team members to coordinate projects and ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Document and report any issues or challenges encountered during the tool manufacturing process.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Perform regular maintenance on tooling equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to custom tooling in a timely manner.
Position Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- Technical diploma or equivalent certification in machining, toolmaking, or a related field.
- Proven experience in a tooling technician or similar role, with hands-on experience in tool fabrication and maintenance.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and the ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with CNC programming and operation.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Knowledge of CNC machining and other advanced manufacturing techniques.
- Familiarity with quality assurance practices and standards.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Prolonged periods of standing and working with machinery.
- Use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
Work Environment:
- The role is primarily based in a manufacturing and warehouse setting.
- Exposure to machinery noise and varying temperatures typical of a production environment.
