Classification: Non-exempt | Part-Time
Hiring Salary Range: $18 per hour
About UMOM New Day Centers: Founded in 1964, UMOM is Arizona's largest provider of services for families experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to end family homelessness by restoring hope and rebuilding lives. With an annual operating budget of $20 million dollars, UMOM provides shelter, supportive services, and housing programs to families and individuals experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County. UMOM serves over 15,000 unique individuals across all our services annually, including those families receiving support at the Family Housing Hub, Maricopa County's family coordinated entry system.
Position Description: The Culinary Enterprises Intern will work side by side with the culinary team in both Residential Dining and Helpings Café. During the first 90 days of internship, you will train to learn and execute the tasks mentioned below, which are listed but not limited to your duties. After 90 days you will be given a performance review to gauge and focus on any opportunities noticed by your supervisors and team members. This will count as a probational period in which upon completion a full-time position may be considered.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Utility
- Checks in and out with the Manager or supervisor on duty in department working in (Residential Dining or Cafe).
- Oversees first in/first out on all products in reach-in(s), walk-in(s) and freezer.
- Sweeps, mops, and organizes the dry storage room, disposable storage room, chemical rack, walk-in(s), and freezer.
- Makes sure all donations are sorted and put away in their appropriate places.
- Puts all deliveries away after checking them in.
- Learns to take inventory of food and kitchen supplies.
- Checks for any maintenance concerns in all coolers and report it to the immediate supervisor on duty.
- Works with volunteers as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by Leadership.
Dishwasher
- Loads, runs, and unloads dish machine.
- Keeps the dish machine clean and reports any functional or mechanical problems immediately.
- Monitors dish machine water temperature to ensure sanitary wash cycle.
- Washes and stores all tableware and kitchenware.
- Maintains, cleans, and organizes the washer and dryer.
- Washes trash cans inside and out.
- Bags and hauls dish room trash and boxes to dumpster at designed times.
- Cleans and organizes the employee area.
- Flattens boxes and takes to the recycle bins.
- Cleans dining area after lunch.
- Sanitizes all hand washing sinks daily.
- Completes assigned deep cleaning of kitchen equipment.
- Checks in and out with the manager or supervisor on duty.
Barista/Cashier
- Learns use of POS (Point of sale) equipment and cash register.
- Serves food as it becomes ready from the kitchen.
- Learns use of blenders, measuring cups, and ingredients used in the Café.
- Learns ingredients in food served in the Café.
- Welcomes and has a friendly demeanor towards clients, customers, and team members.
- Learns all drinks from the Starbucks menu.
- Learns opening and closing procedures for the FOH (Front of the House).
- Checks in and out with the Helpings Cafe Manager.
Prep and Cook
- Learns to follow prep sheets.
- Learns necessary cutting, chopping, and prepping of food needed for service.
- Learns to follow recipes.
- Helps produce proper amounts of food for scheduled meal service.
- Learns the cooking techniques necessary to serve clients during an assigned shift.
- Follows guidelines given by the Manager on number of meals and amounts needed for service.
- Keeps a clean and sanitized station during and at the end of each shift.
- Practices "clean as you go" techniques in all aspects of prep, cook, and service.
- Checks in and out with the manager on duty of the department working in. (Residential Dining, Cafe.)
Qualification and Competency Requirements:
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred
- Experience from participation in the UMOM's Homegrown Training Program
Computer skills
- Familiarity with, or ability to learn, basic applications such as Microsoft Word and Outlook for email communication and documentation responsibilities
Compliance
- Current Maricopa Food Handler's card or the ability to obtain one
- Valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card or the ability to obtain one
- Ability to clear the Central Registry Screening from the Department of Child Safety & Adult Protective Services.
- Ability to comply with and pass all required background check and drug screening requirements, including but not limited to pre-employment and random drug screening as required/requested.
- This position is classified as a safety sensitive position.

- This position is very active and requires standing, moving, bending, stooping, lifting, and reaching all day. The duties of this job require regular exposure to kitchen conditions including heat, cold, humidity, wet, smoke, and loud noises.

Work Schedule: This position is a Part Time position in which your schedule may vary depending on the needs of the business, hours worked per week will be between 25-29 hours which may vary upon needs of the needs of business.
