POSITION SUMMARY:
The Cook at Walking Horse Meadows is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, delicious, and well-balanced meals for our residents. This role involves planning menus, cooking meals, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and adhering to food safety regulations. The Cook plays a vital role in ensuring that residents receive meals that meet their dietary needs and preferences while fostering a warm and inviting dining experience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Meal Preparation: Prepare and cook meals according to established menus, recipes, and dietary guidelines. Ensure that meals are presented attractively and meet quality standards.
- Menu Planning: Assist in planning weekly menus that cater to residents’ dietary needs, preferences, and any special dietary restrictions or medical conditions.
- Food Safety: Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures, including proper food handling, storage, and cleanliness protocols. Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment.
- Resident Interaction: Engage with residents in a friendly and respectful manner. Address any meal preferences or dietary concerns they may have and make accommodations as needed.
- Inventory Management: Monitor food inventory levels, manage ordering of supplies, and ensure that all ingredients are fresh and used within their shelf life.
- Kitchen Maintenance: Maintain kitchen equipment and appliances in good working condition. Report any maintenance issues to the Food Services Manager.
- Team Collaboration: Work effectively with other kitchen staff, including kitchen aides and dietary aides, to ensure smooth meal service operations. Participate in team meetings and contribute to a positive work environment.
- Documentation: Complete and maintain required documentation, such as food temperature logs and cleaning schedules, to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Push, pull, and lift at least 30 pounds. Frequent transporting of residents in wheelchair.
- Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, and bend for periods of up to eight hours with breaks as provided for in the
employee handbook.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Culinary certification or relevant vocational training is a plus.
- Experience: Previous experience as a cook, preferably in a healthcare or assisted living setting, is desirable.
- Skills: Strong culinary skills with a focus on food preparation and presentation. Knowledge of food safety practices and dietary requirements for elderly residents.
- Personal Attributes: Compassionate and patient demeanor, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, lift and carry heavy items, and work in a kitchen environment with exposure to heat and sharp utensils.
