Atlas is seeking a skilled Construction Inspector to support remote transportation projects across U.S. National Parks and Forests. The Roadway Construction Inspector will play a vital role in ensuring the quality of construction activities for road projects in the western and central U.S. This position requires building strong working relationships with contractors, subconsultants, and state DOT or FHWA staff, and observing construction processes to ensure compliance with safety protocols and project specifications.
Working closely with a site project engineer and DOT or FHWA project managers, the Roadway Construction Inspector will help maintain clear expectations for work quality, efficiency, and technical development. This role requires effective communication of technical requirements and deliverables to contractors and clients.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Understand and address client and customer needs while ensuring safety protocols are followed at all times.
+ Complete and submit all required documentation, including daily Inspector’s Daily Reports.
+ Review Contractor’s Daily Reports, Quality Control Supervisor’s Daily Reports, and all field documentation for accuracy and completeness.
+ Perform inspections to ensure quality workmanship, including field measurements of construction materials and products.
+ Monitor construction Contractor’s quality control operations, traffic control, and special environmental contract requirements.
+ Identify changes, errors, or adjustments to contract documents and recommend corrective actions to the Project Engineer.
+ Track and monitor the construction Contractor’s project schedule.
+ Step in to perform Project Engineer duties in their absence.
Competencies:
+ Knowledge of inspection practices for roadway construction, including:
+ Compaction, gradation, asphalt paving, concrete (compressive and flexural), and reinforcement methods.
+ Surveying, drainage structures, riprap placement, and subgrade stabilization.
+ Traffic safety, erosion control, landscaping, mulching, and seeding.
+ Earthwork, grading, and highway materials testing.
+ Structural concrete, steel construction, and post-tensioned concrete.
+ Subgrade and base course construction, and pavement preservation (chip seals, slurry seals).
+ Bridge construction, tunnel grouting, rock bolting, and retaining walls.
+ Wetlands mitigation, recycled asphalt construction, and underground utilities.
+ Construction staking, pavement striping, and sanitary sewer systems.
+ Familiarity with contract plans and specifications for highway construction.
+ Knowledge of OSHA guidelines and safe work practices.
+ Proficiency in highway construction inspection services, including asphalt, concrete, bridge, drainage, and more.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Construction Inspector II
+ 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in highway construction inspection, or
+ NICET Level III Certification (Construction) with 5 years of relevant experience, or
+ Engineering degree with 5 years of applicable experience.
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills.
+ Ability to meet internal requirements for operating company vehicles, maintain a valid driver’s license, and have an insurable driving record.
+ Willingness to travel to remote job sites across the western U.S., often for extended periods.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
Compensation:
$35hr-$70hr
The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the state’s law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
