Position Title: Communications Manager
Reports To: Executive Director
Classification: Regular, Fulltime Exempt
Supervises: Communications Team (may include interns, contractors, staff)
Pay Range: 75,000 – 80,000
POSITION SUMMARY
The Communications Manager plays a key role in advancing, managing and implementing a comprehensive and dynamic communications program that fosters broad-based community engagement, access and support.
We are seeking an experienced, creative professional who is highly skilled in applying written, visual, digital, and electronic communications to further PRNSA’s reach and impact. This is an ideal position for someone who is passionate about applying communications strategies to further PRNSA’s mission of providing opportunities for all people to experience, enhance and preserve Point Reyes National Seashore for present and future generations. The position requires a versatile, self-directed and adept project manager, who thrives as a member of a collaborative team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications Strategies and Calendar:
- In collaboration across departments, design a strategic, comprehensive communications plan and calendar
- Identify key messages and approaches for varied audiences and initiatives
- Implement, manage and evaluate annual communications strategies
- Provide consult on strategies and content development in support of events, programs, donor campaigns and materials
Content Creation:
- Write and edit content for newsletters, social media, press releases, website, donor updates, NPS’s bulletins, and other organization-related communications
- Develop compelling stories that highlight PRNSA’s impact and mission
- Integrate visual, video, sound mediums
Media Relations:
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists and other approved channels (e.g., bloggers)
- Secure media coverage to increase visibility
Social Media and Website Management:
- Manage and grow effective social media presence across platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn)
- Engage with followers and respond to inquiries in a timely manner
- Ensure website and social media accounts are maintained and up to date
Program Management:
- Ensure adherence to PRNSA’s branding guidelines and values
- Manage outside design, printing and related vendor contractual relationships
- Recommend and participate in the on-going evaluation of effectiveness and impact of communications strategies
- Maintain up to date knowledge of communication strategies, channels and platforms, and of diverse audience interests and communication preferences
- Implement approved actions and metrics to ensure PRNSA storytelling is ethical and aligns with our equity, inclusion, and diversity goals
- Help plan and monitor communications-related budgets
Additional Duties:
- In coordination with department teams, help plan and promote events such as fundraisers, webinars, programs, and community outreach activities
- Participate in designated key organizational activities and events, such as DEI programs, major community/donor events or programs
- Participate in cross-department committees and teams
- Promote positive relationships with Park personnel and act as a representative of PRNSA, including through participating on as needed work and/or position-related projects or consultation
- Other duties and special projects as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in communications and marketing, preferably at an environmental-focused organization
- Solid research, writing and editing skills
- Demonstrated ability to create, develop, and implement comprehensive communications materials
- Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for short- and long-term communications projects, technical aspects and requirements of communications tools, and most appropriate and effective applications
- Knowledge, understanding and experience of digital and print communications, including design concepts, various media, and applications
- Skilled communicator, with excellent verbal, public speaking, listening and interpersonal communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to hear and incorporate diverse perspectives; culturally competent
- Demonstrated planning, evaluation and project management skills
- Responsible and accountable, successfully completes assignments and can be counted on to deliver consistent and high-quality results
- Proficiency in collaboration tools including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace or equivalent; proficiency in graphic design skills and related software such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite
- Ability to work effectively independently with limited direction, as well as collaboratively with others as part of a team
- Ability to interact in an effective and professional manner with leadership, co-workers, the public, community members, donors, partners and other individuals/groups
- Experience in environmental sciences, parks, conservation or related fields preferred, with a commitment to the mission and values of PRNSA

EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree and/or experience in Communications, Creative/Graphic Design, Environmental Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations (PR), Visual Communications, or related field or equivalent education/experience
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role demands the ability to work both indoors sitting or standing at a computer and outdoors in a variety of field settings engaged in moderate to rigorous physical activity. While performing the duties of this job, the employee needs to use their hands, arms, legs, eyes, and ears. The employee is frequently required to talk and hear, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, and walk on trails and uneven surfaces. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds of equipment over uneven surfaces. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. SALARY & BENEFITS: Salary range $75,000-$80,000, 40 hours/week, exempt. Benefits include health and dental insurance, paid time off and a 403(b) retirement program.
