University Medical Billing (UMB) is a fully remote department that is viewed as the premier billing office for the University of Utah School of Medicine, serving over 1,800 providers and 30 different specialties across Utah and surrounding states. We are looking for an experienced medical coder to join our team. As a Coder 2, you will utilize coding knowledge to assign CPT and ICD-10 codes for abstracting, coding, and interpreting of outpatient clinic and provider services for professional and/or facility billing while ensuring compliance with all regulatory and reimbursement rules and regulations. Additionally, Level 2 Coders mentor and assist in the training of Level 1 Coders and provide feedback to providers and clinic managers on billing-related issues. Candidates need to have a nationally recognized coding certification and 2 years coding, clinical, or billing experience OR equivalency of 3 years coding experience is required.
Compensation & Benefits
The starting hourly rate for this position is $23 - $25/hr, depending on experience. Members of UMB are eligible for a bonus based on department performance. Employment is contingent on the successful completion of a background check and the adherence to departmental policies, including UMB's Telecommuting Agreement which requires a distraction-free and HIPAA compliant workplace, cameras on for all virtual calls/meetings, and the ability to work during office hours or assigned shift (M-F, approximately 8am to 5pm Mountain Time) regardless of what time zone you live in. Additionally, new hires are required to provide their own monitors (two) and reliable internet service.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Review charges and report on missing, incomplete, or inconsistent documentation by contacting appropriate personnel.
- Reviews, abstracts, and codes multiple/sub specialty services and assigns appropriate coding classification.
- Attend meetings with coding staff, providers, hospital staff and clinic managers to provide feedback on coding related issues.
- Researches and resolves high volume accounts and complex, suspended claims.
- Interprets and applies basic regulatory guidelines to coding and reimbursement decisions.
- Assures adherence to department quality and productivity standards.
- Assists with other department coding needs as requested.
- Serves as a mentor for and assists in the training of Level 1 Coders, meets and trains as needed.
- May present information to providers and assist in training efforts regarding coding/billing.
- Meets productivity and accuracy expectations of the position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) recognized certification such as: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Professional Coder-Payer (CPC-P), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based (CCS- P), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or other specialty certification indicated by the department, OR 3 years coding experience required or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
AND an additional 2 years of coding, clinical, or billing experience required.
Departments may prefer specific certifications over others.
Basic knowledge of clinical documentation requirements related to regulatory and reimbursement rules and regulations, health insurance processing, proficiency with computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and effective human relations and communication skills are also required.
Incumbents qualifying for this position under the equivalency requirement, without certification, may be required to obtain an American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) recognized certification within 6 months of hire.
This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.
