New England Homes for the Deaf, founded in 1901, is a life plan community that offers a continuum of care to Deaf, Deafblind, and hard of hearing seniors, including independent living, rest home, skilled nursing community, Deaf senior centers, short-term rehabilitation services, respite care services and hospice care. The New England Homes for the Deaf mission is to provide long term healthcare, housing, recreational activities and social support for Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing individuals in an accessible, barrier-free, and culturally sensitive environment with optimal communication and architectural resources.
Responsibilities:
- Ability to work either a 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM or 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM shift.
- Complies with all procedures as established by the Director of Nursing.
- Does appropriate paperwork as instructed by the Charge Nurse
- Responsible for and assists with general personal care of residents.
- Shower or bath, shampoo, and skin care
- Oral hygiene - denture and mouth care
- Foot care
- Whirlpool baths
- Incontinency - empty, clean catheters, change diapers, change, and rinse colostomy bags.
- Other care as necessary.
- Applies treatments per order of floor nurse.
- Assists with any physical or emotional therapy as indicated by an appropriate therapist. i.e., walk resident at specified time intervals.
- Accommodates residents, when necessary, even if it is someone else's assignment.
- Assists charge nurse when necessary.
- Assists in transporting residents to activities or appointments when necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Duties:
- Assists residents Diet Aides and Cook in dining room.
- One aide on duty through meal.
- Serve beverages.
- Assists and/or make residents' beds - clean resident quarters.
- Change sheets weekly as needed.
- Straightens clothes (drawers and closet).
- Check for dirty laundry then put it in the hamper.
- Laundry Duties - according to laundry schedule.
- Day shift - assist residents as necessary with laundry. Return all clean laundry to residents and help put away when appropriate.
- Evening shift - collects laundry to be washed. Assists residents as necessary. Check all pockets before sending items to laundry.
- Inform the Charge Nurse when house stock supplies are needed.
- Dispenses medication as responsible person, if certified.
- Welcome and is cordial to all visitors.
Requirements:
- Good physical and mental health.
- Good understanding of body mechanics in transferring residents. Will be required to pass training on transference techniques.
- Two CNAs on Hoyer transfers always.
- Ability to stay calm in excitable or emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
- Ability to work independently.
- All staff are required to take our free, on-site ASL and Culture classes.
- Pleasant/professional personality and behavior.
- Related prior experience helpful. However, "on the job" training will be provided to suit our special requirements.
- Will be expected to do "relief work" on short notice.
- Must have graduated from an accredited Certified Nursing Aid Program with an active CNA certification.
- Will be expected to attend all mandatory In-Service training and CNA meetings monthly.
- Willing to work weekends.
- Ability to perform community activities with residents/drive residents to outside activities.
