I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) supports all sponsored research project activity and large portions of internally funded research projects across the George Washington University’s schools and units. OVPR maintains a number of applications in order to manage various processes that are part of conducting research at an academic institution. The Applications Administrator II, Research, reports to the Director of Operations and Projects within OVPR and provides support to a number of systems in support of OVPR’s business applications while also considering the data, business, and reporting needs of the organization. This position is the administrative owner of a set of software applications that have high impact, and are used in one or more areas to support research and research administration throughout the university. This role is the subject matter expert of one or more software application(s), providing training and documentation to users, and also liaises with vendor(s) and other information technology resource partners at the university. This position gathers user requirements, implements upgrades modifications, troubleshoots errors/future needs, and provides feedback to vendors with limited supervision.
- This position is responsible for all activities related to owning the analysis and administration for high-impact operating systems, in support of research business operations.
- Gathers business needs, implements and maintains technological solutions for OVPR. Serves as a subject matter expert and liaison for various software solutions that are managed by OVPR and utilized by the GW research community.
- Spearheads coordination with various OVPR offices, other GW users, GW’s Information Technology and vendors to provide requirements, analysis, design, testing, deployment, support and evaluation of operational and analytical systems related to research at GW.
- Manages necessary updates, upgrades and system outages, including managing communications with users. Maintains list of system users.
- Identifies, troubleshoots and resolves problems and routine issues within predetermined timeframes in support of systems in production. Provides a high level of customer service with a deep focus on quality and subject matter expertise within research administration. Provides hands-on technical assistance when needed. Provides overall recommendations to solve problems and issues related to business operations.
- Documents and trains end users on matters related to systems/analytics and related processes. Develops system user guides and contributes to end user trainings on various systems. Creates and updates documentation for GW users.
- Proactively identifies and implements strategies to enhance operational efficiency, improve data quality across systems and processes, including running necessary reports, monitoring data available from various systems and working with the OVPR Data Analyst to coordinate data cleanup efforts.
- Participates in various meetings related to OVPR operations and system functionality.
- Acts as a backup to OVPR’s Data Analyst and also cross-trains the Data Analyst to be a backup for the applications administrator.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

- Experience in application systems. Skills including the ability to respond to fast-paced projects thoroughly and accurately, ability to translate business requests into logical solutions, and attention to detail.
- Advanced knowledge in research administration and compliance systems are preferred
In addition, desired qualified candidates ideally would have:
- Experience with sponsored projects.
- Strong customer facing, communication, and organizational skills with ability to work effectively in a team environment across business and technical communities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to work in a demanding environment.
- Familiarity with formal project coordination to complete specific project goals and objectives.
Hiring Range
$68,359.64 - $109,234.47GW Staff Approach to Pay
