Advance Practice Provider (APP) - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant - Neurosurgery
The Neurosurgery APP is responsible for clinical management of complex neurosurgical patients, scheduling of surgical procedures, securing consents, prescribing medications, patient education, and coordination of care. The APP assists neurosurgeons with procedures such as Gamma Knife stereotactic head frame placement and suture removal. The APP coordinates activities, including writing orders and requesting consultations from multidisciplinary team members to meet patients' multiple needs and requests. The APP is responsible for the timely and efficient detection, documentation, and management of significant changes in the Neurosurgical patient's condition and can meet and verbalize the needs of patients in their particular demands and experiences of an illness.
The ideal candidate for the Advance Practice Provider position will have experience in neurosurgery, neurology, and/or oncology, with a preference for those familiar with skull base tumor practices. They must demonstrate flexibility, strong teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment. This position is primarily outpatient and requires on-site presence.

REQUIRED: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant
Licensure/Certification
REQUIRED: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or CardiopulmonaryResuscitation (CPR) certification. MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
PREFERRED: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.

Essential Job Functions
- Patient Care:
- Manage care for complex Neurosurgery inpatients and outpatients.
- Conduct history and physicals, develop care plans, prescribe medications, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide patient education, schedule surgical procedures, secure consents, and manage post-operative follow-up.
- Detect and manage changes in patient conditions promptly.
- Procedures:
- Assist in procedures such as Gamma Knife stereotactic head frame placement and ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt reprogramming.
- Perform suture removal and other procedural tasks.
- APP-Managed Clinics and Programs:
- Manage clinics, including VP shunt check and survivorship clinics.
- Assess patients for late and long-term treatment effects and coordinate care plans.
- Conduct post-operative evaluations and provide lifestyle counseling (e.g., weight management, smoking cessation).
- Clinical Research:
- Identify clinical problems for research and apply research findings to practice.
- Participate in research initiatives, including protocol development and data analysis.
Job Competencies
- Surveillance and Long-Term Care:
- Monitor for recurrence of primary or metastatic cancers and manage late effects of treatment.
- Assess survivors for physical and cognitive deficits and manage comorbid conditions.
- Health Promotion and Prevention:
- Screen for and counsel on risk factors such as smoking, weight, and physical activity.
- Coordinate preventive care and vaccine administration.
Other Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures.
- Participate in institutional quality improvement initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support patient care and department goals.
