Job Description:
SUMMARY
The Accounting Specialist I position reports to the Controller and is responsible for providing accounting assistance for a variety of programs that require attention to detail and accuracy while ensuring compliance with Tribal Code, department policies and procedures, and Federal Laws within the Finance Department.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage and process electronic Travel Authorization forms and prepare per diems for all tribal government travel within procurement and travel policies.
- Timely payment of monthly credit card charges.
- Reconcile monthly credit card statements; journalize transactions, research missing invoices and receipts.
- Investigate and resolve all unauthorized transactions.
- Maintain tracking of company credit cards.
- Ensure accounting transactions (credit cards, travel requests) are coded accurately and processed/posted timely.
- Assist payroll specialist with bi-weekly payroll process for Tribal Government as needed.
- Assist with various journal entries and filing records.
- Assist with annual audit process.
- Ensure confidentiality with payroll and accounts payable related activities.
- Assist with processing electronic PO, check requests, weekly AP check run and urgent check requests as needed.
- Assist with reconciliations of a variety of accounts.
- Timely updates of GSA rates on travel forms.
- Utilize accounting all organizational software: (MIP, LaserFiche, Microix, Paylocity, Amplifund, others as added).
- Maintain appearance standards as outlined in CTCLUSI policies.
- Must be able to interact with Tribal members and the general public in a courteous, professional, and efficient manner.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Maintain a good attendance record.
- Other duties as directed by management.
LEVEL OF AUTHORITY & RESTRICTIONS
- No supervisory authority.
WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be able to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 20 pounds

Experience and Skills:
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Prefer an Associate degree in accounting and/or Business Management
- Prefer general accounting or bookkeeping experience.
- Should possess efficiency in keyboarding.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. May be subject to skills testing.
- Possession of good math skills.
- Willingness to complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training for NIMS certification as arranged by the Tribes.
- Possess reasonable ability to communicate in English.
- This is a non-covered position and will be subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal history background check which may include fingerprinting.
- Must have employment eligibility in the U.S.
- Indian preference will be observed in the hiring process.
