Brief Description of Position
Assisted by an instructional aide, the Resource Specialist provides direct instructional services to students identified by the Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT) as needing such instruction, and identifies and recommends appropriate support services for these students as needed. The Resource Specialist provided consultation services to regular program teachers in conformance with Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s) for learning disabled student’s assigned to the Resourced Specialist Program. The Resource Specialist with an aide will serve an average of 24 students (maximum of 28). The major focus of the Resource Specialist Program will be directed toward enabling students to function adequately in the least restrictive environment (usually a regular classroom in the student’s home school) in which they and other students can be successful.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
A. Educational Assessment
1. Assists the principal (or designee) in the establishment and operation of the school Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT)
2. Assists in processing student referrals for special education services.
3. Provides ongoing educational assessment and diagnosis of children for the purpose of identifying special learning problems and coordinates the development of individual instructional plans as appropriate for students placed in the Recourse Specialist Program.
4. Consults with appropriate specialist regarding the support service to be rendered by such Persons as speech and language therapists, school psychologists, classroom teachers, school nurses, etc. in sharing the responsibilities for implementing the IEP.
B. Instructional Services
- Provides educational instruction as outlined in the IEP for identified individuals with exceptional needs. These will be students who are also, according to their IEP’s, assigned to the regular classroom teachers for half or more of their school day.
- Provides for vocational/career guidance of exceptional children as appropriate.
- Provides direct instructional services for approximately 80% of assigned student contact time.
C. Operations and Coordination
- Coordinates special education services with the regular school programs for each individual with exceptional needs enrolled in the Resource Specialist Program and monitors the implementation of the IEP.
- Provides consultation, resource information, and material regarding individuals with exceptional need to their parents and to regular staff members.
- Consults and maintains close working relationship with the school psychologist in recommending prescriptive teaching for IEP plans.
- Participates in the development and implementation of in service sessions for staff, parents and students as appropriate.
- Has a major responsibility in the selection, training, supervision and evaluation of instructional aide for the Resource Specialist Program.
D. Evaluations
- Assesses pupil progress on a regular basis, revises short-term instructional objectives as appropriate, and consults with appropriate support specialist regarding pupils who do not demonstrate adequate progress.
- In coordination with the school psychologist, maintains a watch and consult list which includes, among others, the names of all students in the school previously served in special education.
- Participates in the planning and evaluation of the Resource Specialist Program.
E. Performs other duties as assigned.

Site Administrator and Program Specialist (evaluation written by site Administrators in cooperation with Program Specialist)
Qualifications
- Special Education Credential.
- Resource Specialist competency certificate.
- Demonstration of an ability to work independently and to function as a leader of others. This implies the ability to get along well with others.
- M.A. and/or other advanced preparation in special education is desirable but not required.
- Ability to communicate in Spanish desirable but not mandatory.
