Pima County’s new Conservation Lands Department is seeking highly motivated and hard-working individuals to fill up to three positions as Park Specialist I. The positions work for the Special Projects Team within the Ranch and Conservation Lands Division. The positions will support maintenance, construction, and restoration projects on Pima County’s thirteen ranch properties, seven flagship mountain and regional parks, and numerous other natural resource parks and conservation areas on 250,000 acres of eastern Pima County.
The position is field-oriented, often in remote areas, with exposure to extreme summer temperatures and cold winter temperatures, and requires the candidate to be in excellent physical condition. This is primarily a manual labor position requiring the ability to lift heavy loads (up to seventy-five pounds); safely operate assigned vehicles and other powered equipment; work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, and cold; safely wear required safety clothing and equipment; and ascend and descend ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms and job sites. On assigned projects, the extended use of hand tools such as shovels, pickaxes, digging bars, and rakes is required. Invasive species work requires the candidate to hike off-trail carrying a heavy backpack and tools in steep and rocky desert terrain, mechanically remove or apply chemicals to combat invasive species, and work where venomous animals may be encountered.
The successful candidate must be willing to work ten-hour shifts, 4 days per week, and will have experience with a variety of construction and maintenance activities on ranches, natural resource parks, and/or open space properties including fencing, welding, wells, water distribution system infrastructure, cattleguards, signs, road, and trail maintenance. The successful candidate will also assist with invasive species control (mechanical and herbicide methods), erosion control, and other restoration projects.
