What you will do.
ATS technicians are trained to provide quality maintenance on our growing fleet of over-the-road trucks and trailers. You'll perform a variety of work including, inspecting, diagnosing, replacing and repairing brake systems ABS, electrical components, steering systems, multi-axle alignments, hydraulic systems, welding/fabrication of steel and aluminum and related equipment. You'll work independently while being part of a great team!
What does it take to be an ATS Technician?
The Tractor Technician Level 2 position is responsible for the inspection, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the various types of ATS tractors by using ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to make sure the tractor is safe to be on the road.
Education and Experience
- Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/ or a minimum five years of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, trailer repair, etc. and experience in cutting and welding.
- Must be DOT certified and have a working Knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters.
- Must have brake certification and working knowledge of brake systems.
- Must have OSHA tire training.
- Must have forklift certification.
- A valid driver's license, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not required.
- Must be able to operate all related shop equipment.
- Good communications skills (written, verbal, listening),
- Competent in using computers including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
- Good electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.
Diagnostic level 2
- With occasional help from someone is mostly capable of diagnosing the problem.
- With occasional help from someone is mostly able to find the root cause of each problem.
- Without occasional help is capable of diagnosing most problems on most systems.
- Always able to look up and follow most manufacturing diagnostic steps.
- Able to use most personal and shop tools to aid with diagnostics.
- Able to use all diagnostic tools for most manufactures.
- Knows and is capable of using some parts of all manufacture diagnostic software.
- Without occasional help able to look into vehicle past records and reports to always successfully diagnose a problem.
Communication level 2
A Level 2 technician can properly explain Complaint, Cause, and Correction so leadership, coworkers, warranty, and drivers can understand every aspect of the problem, cause of the problem, and what was done to fix the problem. Communication of where they are at in the process of the repair will be known. Communication will always be open and transparent to coworkers and leadership.
Successful warranty submission level 2
A level 2 technician will occasionally need help from leadership, parts department, or the warranty department to successfully submit warranty claims. This is followed up with a successful repair, part documentation, and data collection.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine inspections, maintenance and repair on diesel tractors using ATS and OEM guidelines to ensure that the tractors are operating correctly to minimize unplanned failures.
- Perform all necessary/scheduled preventative maintenance services e.g., oil and grease, air filters, etc.
- Complete DOT inspections on outgoing trucks to verify that all necessary repairs have been made.
- Perform brake and wheel end services, 3 axle alignments, all routine cab repairs.
- Perform overhead adjustments.
- Diagnose and replace exterior engine parts, e.g. alternators, starters, water pumps, EGR coolers, etc.
- Perform basic diagnostics using OEM diagnostic equipment.
- Download ECM parameter templates.
- Inspect and repair drive line components, clutches, u-joints, carrier bearings, differential seals.
- Service the HVAC system, reclaim and recycle refrigerant.
- Install and work with all types of in-cab electronic equipment, e.g. ELD, cameras, etc.
- Record all parts and repair work into computer system to track cost of repairs.
- Maintain a clean and professional work environment including tools, equipment, shop, and customer's tractors / sleepers to high appearance standards.
- Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed and PPE is used at all times.
- Participate in online OEM training.
- Meet level 2 standard time rating (90%+)
- Meet level 2 rework frequency (<=2 per year)
- Meet level 2 Quality Assurance Performance (94-96.9%)
- Must furnish intermediate level of tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the job.
- Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.
- Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.
- Works within budget that is set for the department.

- Required to work occasional overtime, Saturdays and other shift vacancies as needed.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Specific Job Related Tasks and Capabilities:
- Be able to perform PM / DOT inspections on your own, and be fully capable of finding all needed repairs on the equipment to bring it to ATS and DOT standards.
- Excellent understanding of the VM Task system and possess a firm understanding of building a repair plan for each tractor that you work on by using appropriate Standard Jobs for the repairs needed.
- Will be DOT and Forklift Certified or be able to be certified by 90 days of hire.
- Demonstrate excellent ability and understanding of lighting and electrical systems. Can diagnose nearly all lighting and electrical issues without help and make the repairs to ATS and DOT standards.
- Demonstrate excellent ability and knowledge of the electronic engine control systems and exhaust aftertreatment systems and how to diagnose and repair various issues within these systems. Understands nearly all aspects of the OEM software systems for diagnostics with minimal help.
- Demonstrate excellent ability and knowledge of the ABS systems and how to diagnose and repair various issues within the brake systems. Understands nearly all aspects of the ABS software systems for diagnostics with minimal help.
- Demonstrate excellent ability and understanding In-Cab technology systems, ELD, cameras, accident mitigation, etc. Can diagnose nearly all issues on all systems with minimal help and make repairs to ATS and OEM standards.
- Will have excellent skills and knowledge to perform nearly all APU mechanical and be able to correctly diagnose & repair all APU electrical and inverter systems with minimal help.
- Demonstrate excellent ability and knowledge to diagnose and repair nearly all chassis system assemblies such as suspension, drive line, steer and drive axles, manual and automated transmission, differentials, etc. Can diagnose nearly all issues on all systems with minimal help and make repairs to ATS and DOT standards.
- Will be A/C certified within 90 days of hire and able to diagnose and repair nearly all HVAC systems with minimal help.
- Will be brake inspection certified within 90 days of hire. Demonstrates understanding on how to replace brakes, wheel seals, S-Cams, Chambers etc. and can perform these procedures without help from anyone, all repairs completed to ATS and DOT specs.
- Will be Tire Certified within 90 days of hire and have a firm understanding of the tire program and demonstrated on the floor through your work day.
- CCC- Will have excellent written and communication skills and can write tech stories that are easy to read and have all the proper information based upon the task at hand.
- Expected to follow all Warranty and Safety SOP's as well as all other documented SOP's posted on the ATS intranet.
- Will demonstrate IDRIVE values at all times. Adheres to company expectations and policies.
- A hands on mentor and train for up to 90 days with new hires, either on ATS way and computer system or hands on training and coaching. Will be able to work and train on all pieces of equipment ATS owns.

- From 1 to 10 lbs. frequently
- From 11 to 25 lbs. frequently
- From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally
- Over 50 lbs. occasionally
Exposure to:
- Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.
- Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
- Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly.
- Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots and when welding, an approved shield.

Compensation & Benefits:
- The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $26.00 - $32.00 plus $4/hr. 2nd shiftdifferential.This position may be eligible for a $2000.00 sign-on bonus, subject to eligibility requirements. Hourly pay rate offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work. In addition to the hourly rate of pay, employees may be eligible for performance-based incentives, which can vary depending on individual and/or company performance.
