What is the job?
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Nurse for the Summer Discovery Program, responsible for overseeing first aid and managing the medical information and medication needs of our students. In this vital role, you will provide immediate care for students requiring first aid or prescribed medications, assist in setting up and maintaining the infirmary, and train staff on emergency protocols. Additionally, you will advise the Program Director on relevant medical issues to ensure the health and safety of all participants.
As a member of our residential team, you will play a crucial role in fostering a safe and supportive environment for students as they embark on their summer learning adventures. Room, board, and transportation are provided for all residential staff members.
Essential Functions
- Policy Adherence: Implement and enforce all policies and procedures as outlined in the Summer Discovery Nurse Manual and Employee Handbook.
- Health Management: Oversee all medical aspects for students and staff, ensuring a healthy camp environment.
- Emergency Response: Assess immediate medical needs and provide first aid for minor injuries, demonstrating strong clinical judgment.
- Care Coordination: Refer students or staff to acute medical care when necessary, ensuring efficient coordination of care.
- Medication Administration: Administer prescribed medications accurately and maintain meticulous logs for all medications dispensed.
- Record Keeping: Document all medical records online, including supplementary notes and incident reports, ensuring comprehensive and accurate records.
- Communication: Communicate effectively with parents, physicians, and staff regarding emerging health issues and student well-being.
- Disease Control: Identify and isolate cases of communicable diseases promptly to protect community health.
- Sanitation Standards: Maintain high standards of sanitation and infection control within the infirmary, ensuring a clean and safe environment.
- Supply Management: Monitor and replenish medical supplies as needed to guarantee readiness for health-related situations.
- Medication Compliance: Collect and manage student medications in accordance with authorized prescriptions, ensuring compliance and safety.
- Regulatory Adherence: Ensure compliance with state health regulations during inspections and respond proactively to health-related inquiries.
- Incident Reporting: Report emergency medical issues to the Director, providing timely updates and recommendations.
- Staff Support: Attend staff meetings and offer health-related guidance during orientation, contributing to a well-informed team.
- Inventory Management: Compile an inventory of existing medical supplies at the program"s conclusion and prepare a list of supplies needed for the next season.
- Infirmary Maintenance: Pack up the infirmary and properly dispose of expired medications and supplies, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Additional Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the program.

- Mobility: Capable of sitting, standing, walking, and kneeling for extended periods to perform various duties.
- First Aid Proficiency: Proficient in applying first aid and triaging injuries with confidence and efficiency.
- Engagement Skills: Effective verbal communicator, able to engage with students, parents, and staff for extended periods.
- Monitoring Capability: Ability to monitor large areas for health and safety, ensuring a secure environment.
- Shift Flexibility: Flexibility to work 24/7 shifts, especially during emergencies, demonstrating commitment to student welfare.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work / Travel: Required to reside on campus for the duration of the program, with additional hours expected for pre- and post-program duties.
Education / Experience / Qualifications:
- Degree Requirement: Valid Registered Nursing (RN) Degree from an accredited program, with a current state license.
- Experience: Proven experience in first aid, triage, and infection control, preferably in educational or camp settings.
- Certifications: Certification in First Aid (American Red Cross preferred) and valid CPR Certification.
- Insurance Requirement: Proof of personal liability insurance with a minimum of $1,000,000 umbrella coverage.
