Isidore Newman School seeks a highly motivated part-time Upper School assistant Speech & Debate Coach for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The Isidore Newman Speech & Debate Team is a full-service program that works with Upper School students in grades 9-12 in the following events: Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, World Schools Debate, Public Forum Debate, Interpretation Events, Platform Events, and/or Limited Preparation Events. Assistant Coaches will work closely with the Director of Speech & Debate to help facilitate practice sessions, offer constructive feedback, travel to competitions, and create a supportive learning environment for students.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
- Strong background in competitive speech & debate at the local, regional and national level. Preference will be given to candidates that are familiar with Cross-Examination and Lincoln Douglas Debate.
- Values strong relationships with students while maintaining high expectations
- Cultural competency demonstrating respect for diversity of identities and experiences and an orientation toward equity and inclusion.
- Professional orientation towards collaboration and innovation.
- A student-centered educator, who embodies our school philosophy "We learn to do by doing."
- A positive sense of humor, self-confidence, and effective oral and written communication skills.
- Preference would be given to someone who is local, but we are also open to virtual coaching.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Weekly and bi-weekly practices after school
- Closely working with the Director of Speech & Debate to develop and implement practices, various drills, and research assignments.
- Traveling and providing on site coaching and judging, as well as chaperoning responsibilities at tournaments across the country.
- Attending at least one tournament a month (and being available for Districts, State, and Nationals).
- Provide one-on-one and small group assistance to support student growth in speech & debate.
- Participate as a positive, collaborative and innovative team member who will support the mission and culture of the team and school.
