About the Job
The School Bus Mechanic is responsible for:
- Diagnosing problems related to all parts of school bus systems
- Performing bus repairs, including wheel alignments, removal or replacement of parts on air brake systems, air conditioners, electronic fuel injectors, electronic transmissions, ABS and hydraulic brakes, diesel power plants and subcomponents, suspensions, and cooling systems
- Replacing belts/hoses, batteries, and light bulbs
- Performing seat repairs (patching, recovering, and foam replacement)
- Knowledge of proper fluid levels and performing oil changes without supervision
- Performing preventive maintenance procedures and maintaining records or logs for Crescent City Schools vehicles
- Basic electrical diagnostics, including power/ground wire circuits
- Diagnosing problems related to propulsion, suspension, braking, and steering
- Performing other related duties as assigned

- Have recent, verifiable experience as a mechanic working on buses
- Hold a current and valid driver’s license
- Have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class B CDL with proper endorsements
- Can pass a background check, DOT drug screening, DOT physical, DOT Clearinghouse Check, and MVR
- Can read and comprehend maintenance manuals and electrical diagrams
- Can use current test equipment including but not limited to digital multimeters, starting/charging systems testers, diagnostic scanners, and system testing equipment
- Have a high school diploma, G.E.D., and/or vocational training in automotive mechanics
- Hold A.S.E. certification; A.S.E. Master Technician certification preferred
- Understand English and read and write legibly for required reports
- Can function well without close supervision
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work outdoors and indoors under varying weather conditions. The job requires stooping, bending, climbing, kneeling, walking throughout the shift, and handling parts ranging from 10 to 50 pounds or more
- Must be capable of standing or walking for a full work shift
- Ability to lift and carry at least 60 lbs
- Must be able to manipulate 100 lbs
- Must be able to stand and walk on uneven surfaces while working
- Must be able to work while in the following positions or conditions: sitting, bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching, crouching, lying down prone or supine, at shoulder level or above, or any combination listed above
- Must be able to work at heights on platforms and man-lifts. Must be able to work in pits under lifted heavy equipment
- Must be able to work in all required Personal Protective Equipment and Safety gear
