About the Job
Our HIM Specialist, Senior accurately demonstrates the ability to perform all duties of Health Information Management Specialist and incorporate with formal education. Accurately, efficiently, and independently performs all aspects of Health Information Management processes, chart analysis, physician deficiency, and release of information and merge process within the electronic health record. Ensures the quality and the integrity of the patient information and analysis of data. Provides training to colleagues. Serve as informal leader in the department and as a liaison between ancillary departments and other HIM areas.
Qualifications:Education:
· Associate’s degree required. Two years’ of equivalent professional experience may be accepted in lieu of Associate degree requirement. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
Certification in Health Information Management (RHIA, RHIT, CPHIT, CPEHR, other) preferred.
Experience:
· Minimum 3 years HIM experience required.
· Microsoft applications experience required. Demonstrates proficiency in word, excel and outlook.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of anatomy and physiology required.
- Demonstrated medical terminology required.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated ability as an informal leader and in leading groups.
- Minimum typing skill of 40 WPM.
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Responsibilities:- Coordinates records from all departments, logs and creates appropriate discharge register to verify receiving of records. Performs extensive search of missing records from units.
- Independently prepares medical record documentation for scanning according to HIM policy and procedures. Processes electronic images according to HIM policy and procedures.
- Independently reviews the components of a medical record and identifies incomplete components as defined in the Health Information Management policy and procedures.
- Analyzes medical record history to determine appropriate steps to merge, switch, combine, or uncombined accounts appropriately, which is critical for patient safety. Provides communication to other ancillary departments the outcome.
- Verifies transcribed documents for quality. Independently determines appropriate changes. Process re-works as appropriate. Provides electronic documentation (fax, etc.) or mail, as appropriate.
- Communicates with physician offices on outstanding transcription issues and delinquency issues.
- Independently evaluates submitted authorizations, and determines the appropriate information to be released to the requestor, on HIPAA and TJC guidelines. Ensures patient confidentiality according to the laws and regulations.
- Independently evaluates subpoenas, attorney requests, requests for CMS, Public Aid and other to fulfill requests for patient information.
- Ensures the quality of the medical information by verifying the completeness, accuracy and proper entry into the electronic health record.
- Reviews and analyzes study requests and processes based on study policy and procedure.
- Researches and provides statistical and detailed information to external agencies.
- Reviews and assesses electronic access requests for accuracy and appropriateness, process as appropriate in a timely manner and within all applicable policies and procedures.
- Completes system downtime testing, as needed for planned upgrades or unplanned downtimes.
- Completes assigned special projects, including but not limited to analysis of processes, revising policies and procedures, monthly statistics, routine correspondence, or financial impact analysis.
- Maintains knowledge of hospital, department and regulatory policies and procedures related to Health Information Management.
- Communicates with ancillary department, physicians, medical offices and coding.
- May provide on call support after hours.
- Serves independently as informal leader on internal or house-wide project teams, overseeing needs in Health Information Management and coordinating appropriately within the department or with other departments.
- Provides support to all levels of the organization, clinical, financial and administration that uses patient data in decision-making and daily operations.
